Ass

In which Jenny spills the beansAt the start of this ‘life changing’ episode in our lives, my wife Katie and I had been married for five years.  Just the two of us, trying to stake our claim before having children.Kate and I had met as children in the late fifties, of officers serving in the British Army On the Rhine (BOAR). Despite our young ages, we had formed a close attachment, promising that we would be together come what may.I flew back to the UK to attend boarding school. During my first term and completely unknown to me, Katie’s family was posted to Scotland. A fact which I only learnt when I returned to Germany on my first  Christmas break from school. Some twenty years later we found each other quite by accident and after reconnecting were married eighteen months later. At the time of the beginning of this story, we had been married for five years. We both had demanding jobs and, like many young couples, were intent on making our way and purchasing our own place.Katie is a stunner; slim, 5’4″ with beautiful figure, long legs, auburn hair and green eyes, she turns heads wherever she goes. I’m a lucky man and I know it!I manage the Operations facility of a small Charter Airline based at London Gatwick, a somewhat hectic and demanding position requiring me to be on call 24/7. My lack of ‘Home Time’ was causing some problems between us.”Your ear is always glued to that phone!  Can’t we ever have some time to ourselves?  Tell them to leave you alone.  They don’t pay you enough for all this extra time.” And so on.Well, she was right, but I had to make my mark.  Maybe they were taking advantage.  I had told her that it would ease as the staff got more experience and confidence, but it was taking longer than I had expected.Eventually, I suggested that Katie went out at the weekends with friends.  She agreed and spent most weekend evenings out with one friend in particular, Jenny. Amazing how such seemingly small changes can lead to to such huge consequences!Jenny worked in ground handling at the airport, was almanbahis single and a real ‘party girl’.  Most Fridays, Kate would go to Jenny’s and do the rounds of the local pubs and nightclubs with Jenny and their friends and return to our house late Saturday after a night on the town, giggling like school girls. It was good to see Katie so happy in Jenny’s company.  And so the story begins…Friday 4th February, 1994I was looking forward to the weekend and had just this 3:00 o’clock meeting to attend before I could start to wind down. As I walked through the airport terminal, I met Jenny going in the same direction and caught up with her. It turned out she had been invited to the same meeting.  Jenny often stayed over on Saturday night but hadn’t done so for a couple of months now. I suggested that we have a cup of coffee in one of the airport coffee shops after the meeting to catch up. The meeting closed at 3:45 and we walked through the terminal chatting about its outcome.  We bought our coffee and found, much to my surprise, an unoccupied sofa.”I haven’t seen you for months, Jen. How is your workload now? Still taking it home at weekends?” I asked.I saw a fleeting look of confusion cross her face. “No,” she said, shaking her head. “I don’t take work home. It’s all done here at the office. Much of it is sensitive financial material so the company would never let me take it home.””Oh, sorry. I thought Katie said your workload was high and you had to work at home most weekends.” I smiled. “I must have misunderstood her. So what’s your excuse for curtailing our fun weekends then?” I asked jokingly. She then told me how she had met a new man and, “Well, you know how it is, Peter.  I love spending time with you and Katie but all those young men after my body…” she smiled.”That’s okay.  Perhaps all four of us can all get together some time for a meal?””That would be lovely!” She said with enthusiasm”Well, no pressure.  I’ll mention it to Katie and leave it up to you two to sort out time and date.””Speaking of the almanbahis yeni giriş lovely Katie,” she said, “How is she? I haven’t seen her for simply ages.”It was my turn to be confused. Kate had spent Friday night to Sunday afternoon at Jenny’s for her usual girl’s weekend with Jenny. “I thought she was with you at your place last weekend?””No, I haven’t seen Katie for…” she stopped suddenly.  “Oh!…” she said and looked looked pointedly at her watch. “I’m so late for my next meeting. Sorry Peter, I must fly.”Flustered, she stood quickly and gathered her things together. She paused, bent and kissed me on the cheek then looked me in the eyes. “You are a lovely man, Peter, and I love you like a brother. I’m so sorry Peter, really, so sorry.”I looked down briefly, trying to make sense of what I’d just been told. I looked up, saying as I did so, “Sorry about what?” But she was already hurrying away to be swallowed up by the crowd.I finished my coffee. Something wasn’t right here. Katie had definitely told me that she was spending last weekend with Jen.I went over everything which had happened over the past year. What was going on? We were building a life together. We were happy and in love. Our jobs were good, we had a beautiful house.  Yes it was tough and we didn’t have much time for each other, but we were getting there.Eventually I realised that there was only one way to resolve this and get to the truth. Have it out with Katie.I called the office and told them that I was calling it a day and that I could be contacted at home if needed. The journey home passed in something of a daze as I tried to think of a reasonable explanation for her lie.  I was hoping to be there before Katie got home from work, but as I pulled into the driveway, her car was already parked by the front door. She was home much earlier than normal.I sat in my car thinking round and round in circles for ten minutes, not able to reach any conclusion about how I was going to tackle this. I didn’t want to make a complete fool almanbahis giriş of myself by accusing her of something for which there might be a reasonable explanation, but Jenny’s last words to me seemed ominous. Eventually, I could put it off no longer. I decided just to get it over with and just ask the question. She wasn’t downstairs but I could hear the shower running so I made my way up to the bedroom. She must have heard me coming up the stairs because as I entered the room, she was just coming out of the en-suite bathroom wrapped in a big fluffy white towel. She looked tense. “Hello Darling. What are you doing back this early?” she said.I saw her eyes glance round the room.  Checking for anything out of place? I wondered.I kept my distance. I kissed her. “How about you? You’re not usually this early either. When did you get back?” I asked.”They owe me some hours anyway. So I took a couple back. How was your day?” she asked.”I went to a meeting at the airport this afternoon. Jenny was there too. We had a coffee after the meeting.”I saw a fleeting smile cross her face.  I had a feeling she knew what I was going to say.”She asked me how you were.”Expecting her to say something, I paused. Nothing was forthcoming.”You saw her last Sunday, Kate.”Still no reaction.”She said, and I quote, ‘I Haven’t seen her for simply ages’. Yet you told me that you spent last weekend with Jenny.  Why did you tell me you were with Jenny.  It’s quite obvious that you weren’t.””I know all about your meeting.  She called me and told me about it.  If you must know, I was with some other friends last weekend.””Do I know them?” I asked.”No but you’ll meet them soon, and I’ll introduce you to them.””Kate, I want to. I want to know exactly what’s been going on and why you lied to me.” I said, emphasising word lied.”Peter, please!  I will tell you all about it, I promise. Just let me get changed. When I come down, we’ll have a drink and talk. I need you to be strong but please don’t think I don’t love you any more or anything like that. I love you with all my heart but this is very important to me and so I am looking to you for understanding and support.  Now please let me get dressed. Get some wine from the garage and pour me a large glass of white, would you?”
